VAPORESSO TARGET 80 Review: Test Results Are In

The TARGET 80 is the latest kit by VAPORESSO, a company that has become quite popular for making some of the best vapes in various categories. Unlike their recent products which have been pods and AIOs for the most part, the TARGET 80 is a fully-fledged box mod compatible with other atomizers. It uses an internal battery rated at 3000 mAh, a large color screen, a fully capable chipset, and a tank that has a 5 mL capacity.

The included tank is the GTX 26 pod tank, which is the same atomizer they used in their LUXE 80 kit. It uses the GTX platform coils and the only difference here is that on the TARGET kit it comes with an adapter that allows it to be used on any device with a 510 connection. Since I have already reviewed this tank, I won’t be going over it again—but you can find all the info you need in the LUXE 80 review.

Build quality and design

The TARGET 80 is a very small mod and pocketable mod with an internal battery. It stands at 130.9 mm x 38.3 mm x 30.8 mm and it’s got enough weight to feel solid and well-built without feeling too heavy. I received the red version—the other color options are black, green, grey, and blue. They all have the same “satin gunmetal” frame with the only difference between them being the color of the textured panel.

While it’s not a rugged mod it is pretty sturdy thanks to what VAPORESSO calls a “full cage” design—which basically is just a sturdy frame fitted around the mod. They also all have a copperish/reddish platform under the 510 with a hook that comes out for a lanyard.

On the front of the device, you have the 0.96-inch color TFT screen which is bright and easy to see. The screen is excellent on this device. On the two sides, you have your colored panels. Branding is very simple with a “VAPORESSO” on the back engraved into the frame in matching color. All in all, it’s a really good-looking mod with plenty of color options and nice design features to it.

Features and functions

The TARGET comes with three basic modes accessible through the main screen—standard power mode and two variations. A pulse mode to pulse power, and a “F[t]” mode which just pulses power in a different way. Personally, I don’t get the point of making output choppier in a pattern for a better vape. Doesn’t add anything to vaping and seems more style than substance to include. I preferred using this mod in regular power mode.

Using the menu, you can also gain access to the DIY mode which allows you to pick between soft, normal, and hard preheat, as well as Voltage and Bypass mode. Outside of temp control, the TARGET 80 offers most of the options you can find in a mod these days. A watt curve mode would have been nice here as they’ve had before, and it’s always a useful feature to have for those who are using it.

Using the TARGET 80

The TARGET 80 is a pretty typical mod. There is a fire button and an up button and down button and a menu button. Basic operations are as follows:

The menu has the three modes above, as well as a DIY mode for preheats, Voltage mode, Bypass, and a Settings area for puffs, turning their smart mode on and off, and resetting the mod to default. On the puff counter, there is also a puff history by day over the last seven days. Note that there is no option to change screen color. The screen displays the wattage, a puff counter, battery meter, resistance, puff timer, and voltage output.

Battery and charge rate

The TARGET 80 uses a Type-C port located on the front of the mod under the mode button. They list the charge rate at 2A and the capacity of the internal battery at 3000 mAh. The max charge rate I got during my testing was 2.34A which is more than good enough to earn a 2A rating and actually undersells it a bit—I would have been ok with a 2.5A rating since most companies round up. It does allow for passthrough vaping as well so you can vape while it charges.

I timed a full charge at 1 hour and 22 minutes, which is really good for the battery size. It’s worth noting that the device still charges for about ten minutes after the mod says it's full, so if you take it off the charger right away, you’ll save yourself some battery life.

For battery size, I got a usable 2715 mAh. It’s not uncommon for companies to overrate battery sizes, to the point where I expect them to be overstated by 20% every time. This one is only about 10% overstated, so their rating is pretty accurate. I’ve pointed out in other reviews how their usable battery life has been overstated by a lot, and pointed out that they should look into the mod settings and the battery manufacturer they use to have more accurate listings in the future. Thankfully, it looks like they listened—which is one of the reasons why they are a great company.

Power mode performance

The only rating VAPORESSO list is max wattage, which is a bit disappointing. I wish they would have listed all three max outputs. During my testing, the max achieved wattage was 87, so excellent rating at 80 watts. The amp limit I got was 27 amps with a 0.1-ohm coil, so good job there for an internal battery mod as most are between 25-30 amps.

The volt limit I got was 7.469, so there is a boost circuit which is important to have in a single internal battery mod. It’s possible I could get a little more with a higher ohm coil as it maxed out on wattage at that point with a 0.64-ohm coil. In short, there is plenty of voltage so there’s no concern.

The mod adjusts in 0.5-watt increments which is nice and much better than 0.1-watt increments. It scrolls fast but doesn’t round-robin. As for accuracy, it does tend to fire a little low at lower resistances, but at the higher resistances like my 0.64-ohm build, it hits a little high (which is pretty typical for many mods.) Overall, VAPORESSO did a good job with this mod. Box mods aren’t in high demand these days with AIOs and pod kits being more popular. And while this one does lack some features from their previous mods like temp control and watt curve, it’s still an easy-to-use mod that just works. It’s a good option for someone looking to get their first actual mod and want something small and simple that works well, charges fast, and is well built.
